The children follow the systematic approach to learning phonics. They learn through Letters and Sounds (Primary National Strategy).
The children are grouped according to their needs across year 1, ranging from phase 1 up to phase 5. The children in year 2 begin the support for spelling programme whilst those at a lower level are supported in a smaller group. The children quickly learn to apply their skills daily in reading and writing, with an aim to them being confident using phase 5 phonics independently.
