The Rights Respecting Schools Award - Unicef UK
Unicef works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive.
The school’s Unicef Rights Respecting Award threads through the whole school. It helps develop pupils’ acceptance of difference and diversity, and provides them with a strong moral compass.
The Steering Group delivered a Rights Respecting School lesson to the Nursery children. The Nursery children were great and the Steering Group enjoyed the experience!
The children’s right that has been the focus for May was Article 17: (access to information from the media)
Every child has the right to reliable information from a variety of sources and governments should encourage the media to provide information that children can understand. Governments should protect children from materials that could harm them.
Children are encouraged to view factual information from reliable sources:

The children’s right that has been the focus for April was Article 7: (birth, registration, name, nationality)
Every child has the right to registered at birth, to have a name and nationality and as far as possible, to know and be cared for by their parents.
The children’s challenge was to design a Coat of Arms/Family Shield to represent Article 7.
This was completed by having a different focus for each section of the shield. For example, an image and/or words to represent your family; your families country of origin; your families faith/beliefs/values; your culture; a hobby or a particular interest.
The Steering Group enjoyed looking at the shields.
The children’s right that has been the focus for March was Article 14: (freedom of thought, belief and religion)
Every child has the right to think and believe what they choose and also practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights. Governments must respect the rights and responsibilities of parents to guide their child as they grow up.
The children’s challenge was to make a poster to represent Article 14. The Steering Group thought the children created some brilliant posters.
