Heald Place Primary School

Book Bench Project

A group of Able and Talented Year 5 children took part in the Bookbench Project where the school worked in collaboration with Read Manchester, Wild in Art, and Manchester City Council. The children chose the book ‘The Journey’ by Francesca Sanna as the inspiration for the BookBench. This book is about the story of a family fleeing a war and trying to make a perilous journey to safety. The group felt this story was significant for our school as many of our families, and grandparents are refugees and have made brave journeys across countries, facing danger with courage and strength along the way.

The children showed fabulous creativity, problem solving and team work in planning this project from start to finish. Here are some photos of the process! The Bookbench was on show at Manchester Museum during the summer and is now installed in our reception area for all to see!
